Getting Started!

Counseling can be an exciting, yet anxiety producing, endeavor. I've listed a few things here that will give an idea of what to expect. First, the more I know about you the more I will be able to help. For this reason, it is important to arrive early to your appointment to fill out some paperwork. Typically, I will be with another client when you arrive so I will leave the paperwork on a clipboard in the lobby. Feel free to get started on the paperwork while you wait. It is also important to bring a picture ID and a copy of your insurance card. When the paperwork is finished, just relax and kick back in the lobby, as soon as I finish with the client I am seeing I will be right out to get you. If you prefer, you can click below to print the forms and bring them, completed, to your first appointment.

 

After the paperwork is filled out I will come out to the lobby to meet you. Our first session together will be a little different from future visits. In our initial meeting we will focus on getting to know each other and coming up with a plan that will help you reach your goals. The first question that usuallly comes up is "what brings you into counseling today?" The initial session will be spent obtaining background information on you and asking questions that will help us meet your goals. 

Your First Session!

 

The first session usually lasts about an hour and we will finish up by collecting any fees or copays and then scheduling our next appointment.  Toward the end of the first appointment we will talk about the frequency of visits and what will work for you in order to meet your goals. Typically, this means weekly sessions for the first phase of therapy and then decreasing visits to every other week when you and I feel comfortable doing so. I will also give you some time at the end of session to ask any follow up questions about me or the process of counseling. That's it! We will then be on our way to reaching your goals!
